Portfolio management life cycle is a continuous process - as opposed to a one-off event optimization - and must be sustained by long term organizational enablers (Methods & Tools sharing, PMO Platform, Center of excellence & training to support decentralized execution and roll-out of the projects..).

Small to Mid Size projects typically receive insufficient management attention or control, causing inefficient capital allocation, poorly prioritized projects or performance deviations. On the other hand, a one-size-fits-all treatment and solution used for large or complex projects generally leads to bureaucratic overload for those small or simpler projects.
At the end, the basic principles of sound governance and risk management shall be followed and customized with good sense to improve the way projects are selected, managed and controlled : business strategy alignment, adapted stage-gate process, stress testing the assumptions on business case, external eye & independent challenger, project charter & scope clarity & optimization, streamline the solution and design, early involvement of procurement.

By applying appropriate rigor in evaluation, prioritization and optimization (“delete, reduce, improve, postpone”) of Small to Mid Size projects during planning phase, companies can unleash significant value avoiding significant capital-spending, boosting reliability or enhancing NPV gains by better capital alignment and allocation. During implementation phase, a continuous and proactive management system is needed in order to arbitrate and allocate the resources, pilot the risks & issues and monitor the execution performance and KPI of the individual projects and global portfolio.
